Recovery

The majority of tummy tucks can be performed as outpatient procedures, and patients go home a few hours after surgery. Because a tummy tuck involves surgery on the abdominal muscles, recovery after a tummy tuck takes more time than that for other procedures. The muscle repair is the most uncomfortable part of the surgery, with most patients complaining of feeling “tightness” after surgery. Dr. Jacobson utilizes a long-acting local anesthetic, Exparel, which is injected during surgery and significantly decreases pain by releasing medication to numb the area for the first 72 hours postoperatively. You will have varying degrees of swelling, which will improve over the first weeks- months after surgery as your body heals. You will receive a compression garment to wear for a few weeks following surgery, which helps to minimize swelling and encourage optimal skin contraction. Additionally, Dr. Jacobson will provide specific instructions on activity restrictions after surgery, which ensure that the tissues heal appropriately to give you the best results.
