The cost of Dermal filler treatments varies depending on the type of filler used, the amount of product needed, and your desired aesthetic goals. As a general pricing guideline, the average cost for a syringe of lip filler is approximately $625–$700.

Different fillers are designed for different goals. Some provide softer, subtle hydration and definition, while others create more structure, volume, or projection. Dr. Jacobson will help guide you toward the best option based on your natural anatomy, lip shape, and desired result.

Most lip filler results last approximately 6–12 months, although longevity can vary depending on the specific filler used, your metabolism, lifestyle, and how much movement occurs in the lips over time.

The lips are a very dynamic area of the face with constant motion from talking, eating, drinking, smiling, and kissing, which means lip filler tends to metabolize somewhat faster than filler placed in less mobile areas such as the cheeks or jawline.

Several factors can influence how long your results last, including:

• The type of filler used
• Your individual metabolism
• Amount of filler injected
• Lip anatomy and tissue characteristics
• Lifestyle factors such as exercise and smoking
• Whether you are maintaining filler consistently over time

Immediately after treatment, the lips will often appear fuller due to swelling. As swelling resolves over the first 1–2 weeks, the filler settles into a softer, more natural result.

Over time, the body gradually and naturally metabolizes hyaluronic acid filler. This process is gradual — most patients notice a slow decrease in volume and hydration rather than an abrupt “disappearance” of filler.

Many patients choose maintenance appointments once or twice yearly to maintain consistent shape, hydration, and definition. Others may prefer a more subtle approach and allow filler to fully dissolve before retreatment. With thoughtful treatment planning and conservative layering over time, lip filler can often be maintained in a very natural-looking way without appearing overfilled.

Although both treatments can enhance the lips, they work in very different ways and are designed to accomplish different goals.

Lip Filler

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid filler to physically add volume and structure to the lips. Filler can:

• Increase lip fullness and volume
• Improve hydration
• Define the vermilion border (“lip line”)
• Enhance symmetry and shape
• Improve projection and pout
• Support the corners of the mouth
• Smooth fine lines around the lips

Lip filler physically occupies space within the lips, allowing for both subtle and more dramatic enhancement depending on the amount and type of filler used.

Results are visible immediately, typically last 6–12 months, and are customizable based on your anatomy and goals.

Lip Flip

A lip flip uses small amounts of Botox or another neurotoxin placed into the muscle surrounding the upper lip (the orbicularis oris muscle). The neurotoxin relaxes the muscle slightly, allowing the upper lip to gently “flip” or roll outward.

A lip flip can:

• Create a subtle upper lip show
• Improve lip visibility when smiling
• Reduce excessive inward curling of the upper lip
• Create a softer, relaxed appearance
• Help balance a gummy smile in select patients

Importantly, a lip flip does not add actual volume to the lips. It simply changes the position and movement of the upper lip muscle.

Results are more subtle than filler, typically develop over 1–2 weeks, and generally last around 6–8 weeks, sometimes longer depending on the patient.

Which Treatment Is Better?

It depends entirely on your goals and anatomy.

Patients wanting:

• More fullness, structure, or definition → often benefit from lip filler
• A subtle enhancement without added volume → may prefer a lip flip
• Both improved shape and subtle outward lip show → may benefit from combining both treatments

Most patients report only mild discomfort during lip filler treatment and are often pleasantly surprised by how tolerable the procedure is.

At Jacobson Cosmetic Surgery, we use a compounded topical numbing cream prior to treatment that is typically applied for about 5–10 minutes before injections begin. This significantly improves comfort during the procedure.

In addition, most hyaluronic acid fillers used in the lips contain lidocaine — a built-in numbing medication within the filler itself — which helps numb the lips progressively throughout treatment to maintain comfort as we go.

Lip filler may be placed using ultra-fine needles or microcannulas depending on the treatment plan, anatomy, and desired outcome. Dr. Jessica Jacobson also uses advanced injection techniques designed to minimize discomfort, swelling, and bruising while creating soft, natural-looking results.

Because the lips are a sensitive and highly vascular area, some pressure, pinching, or temporary tenderness can occur during treatment. Mild swelling afterward is very common and expected, particularly during the first 24–48 hours.

Many patients who have previously had filler elsewhere without numbing are especially surprised by how comfortable the experience can be with proper preparation, numbing, and technique.

Lip filler treatments require very little downtime, and most patients return to normal daily activities the same day. However, because the lips are highly vascular and sensitive, some temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, and firmness are extremely common after treatment.

Immediately after injections, the lips may appear:

• More swollen or “overfilled” than the final result
• Firm or slightly uneven
• Tender or tight
• Bruised in certain areas

This is completely normal and is usually a combination of:

• The filler product itself attracting fluid
• Localized inflammation from the injections
• Minor bleeding or bruising
• Swelling from the lidocaine (numbing medication) contained within many fillers

Swelling is typically most noticeable during the first 24–48 hours after treatment and then gradually improves over the following several days. The lips often soften significantly during the first week as the filler settles naturally into the tissues.

Bruising can occur even with excellent technique because the lips contain many small blood vessels. Some patients bruise very minimally, while others — especially those prone to bruising or taking blood-thinning supplements — may experience more noticeable bruising for several days.

To help minimize swelling and bruising, we generally recommend:

• Ice intermittently during the first 24 hours
• Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
• Avoid excessive heat, alcohol, and heavy salt intake immediately afterward
• Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements when medically appropriate
• Avoid excessive pressure or massaging of the lips unless specifically instructed

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work, errands, social activities, or dinner plans the same day, although many prefer to avoid scheduling lip filler immediately before major events or photos due to temporary swelling. Final results are typically best evaluated after approximately 1–2 weeks once the filler has fully settled.

Lip filler results are visible immediately after treatment, so you will notice increased volume, shape, hydration, and definition right away. However, your immediate post-treatment appearance is not your final result.

Right after injections, the lips are typically a combination of:

• Filler product
• Swelling
• Mild inflammation
• Fluid retention
• Bruising
• Temporary firmness from both the injections and the lidocaine contained within many fillers

Because of this, the lips may initially appear:

• Larger than expected
• Uneven side-to-side
• Firm or “stiff”
• More swollen in the center or along the borders

Swelling is usually most noticeable during the first 24–48 hours and then gradually improves over the following several days. It is very common for swelling to fluctuate somewhat during the first week, especially in the mornings.

As the filler integrates into the tissue, the lips gradually soften and settle into a smoother, more natural appearance. Most patients notice significant improvement within the first week, with final results typically best evaluated around 1–2 weeks after treatment.

At that point:

Swelling has largely resolved

• The filler has settled naturally into the tissues
• The lips feel softer and more natural
• Shape, symmetry, and volume can be more accurately assessed

This is also why we generally recommend waiting the full 2 weeks before deciding whether additional filler or adjustments are needed.

First — don’t panic! Mild bruising is a very common and normal side effect after injectable treatments, especially in delicate facial areas such as the lips.

At Jacobson Cosmetic Surgery, we provide ice packs after treatment to help minimize swelling and bruising. Applying ice intermittently during the first 24 hours can be very helpful.

To help reduce bruising and prevent worsening, we also recommend:

• Avoiding blood-thinning medications and supplements for approximately one week after injections when medically appropriate
• Avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours
• Limiting alcohol intake immediately after treatment

Helpful blood-thinning agents to avoid may include:

• Aspirin
• Ibuprofen
• Fish oil/Omega-3 supplements
• Vitamin E
• Certain herbal supplements

We also recommend topical and oral arnica, a natural herbal supplement commonly used to help minimize bruising and swelling. We carry the Silagen® bruise care line in our office specifically for this purpose, and all of our post-lip “chapstick” aftercare products contain arnica to support healing and comfort after injections.

Most bruising improves significantly over several days and can often be covered with makeup once the injection sites have closed.

Yes — in many cases, hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers can be dissolved if needed. This is one of the reasons HA fillers are so popular and versatile.

A medication called hyaluronidase is injected into the treated area to break down and dissolve the filler. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that naturally breaks apart hyaluronic acid, allowing the body to gradually reabsorb the filler material.

Patients may choose to dissolve filler for a variety of reasons, including:

• Wanting a more natural or less full appearance
• Filler migration
• Asymmetry
• Lumpiness or irregularity
• Swelling that persists
• Unsatisfactory cosmetic results
• Rare vascular complications requiring urgent treatment

The dissolving process itself is typically quick and performed in the office. Depending on the amount and type of filler present, some patients may require more than one dissolving session to achieve the desired result.

It is also important to understand that hyaluronidase can dissolve both filler and some of your body’s own naturally occurring hyaluronic acid temporarily, so there may be a period where the area appears flatter or slightly deflated before tissues rebalance and heal.

Some swelling, tenderness, or bruising can occur after dissolving injections, but recovery is generally minimal. In many cases, patients may choose to refill or reshape the area after the tissues have settled appropriately.
