Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast enlargement or breast implants, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to increase breast size and enhance breast shape, typically through the placement of silicone or saline breast implants, or in some cases, fat transfer. The ultimate goal of breast augmentation is to enhance a patient’s natural proportions and create a more symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing breast profile.
Who is a good candidate?
- Non-smokers
- Individuals 18-65+ years old in generally good health without conditions that impair wound healing
- Individuals who lost shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss or with aging
- Individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations

Breast Implants Settling Expectations
Recovery
You will be placed in a supportive non-underwire bra, to be worn for the first 4-6 weeks after surgery. This ensures that the breast implant is supported while you are healing. Additionally, Dr. Jacobson will provide specific instructions on activity restrictions after surgery, which ensure that the tissues can heal appropriately to give you the best results.
In general, you may feel sore the first week or so, and you will need to limit strenuous exercise for about 2-4 weeks. Breast augmentation patients can expect 4 weeks of lifting restrictions.
If you have a submuscular (underneath the pectoralis muscle) implant placement-which is generally the preferred placement-there will be some additional things to consider. Tightness of this muscle can cause the implant to sit high on the chest during the initial healing process. Typically, this settles over the first couple months as the muscle relaxes and the implants to settle or “drop” into their optimal position.
