Lip Lift

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the philtrum — the distance between the nose and upper lip — and gently rotates the upper lip outward. This creates a lasting structural improvement in lip position, tooth show, and lower facial balance. Unlike lip fillers, which add temporary volume through injection, a lip lift addresses the underlying anatomy of the lip. Fillers require ongoing maintenance and cannot correct a long philtrum or lip inversion. For patients whose primary concern is the shape and position of the upper lip rather than volume alone, a lip lift typically produces more natural and longer-lasting results.

The incision for a subnasal bullhorn lip lift is placed directly beneath the base of the nose, following the natural curves of the nostrils and columella. Because the incision sits within the natural shadow at the base of the nose, it typically heals in a very discreet location. Dr. Jacobson closes the incision in multiple layers using ultra-fine sutures, which helps distribute tension and supports better scar healing. With careful surgical technique and proper post-operative care, the scar generally fades well over time and becomes increasingly difficult to detect. Scar maturation continues gradually for 6–12 months.

Lip lift surgery is an outpatient procedure that typically takes approximately one hour. Most patients experience swelling, mild bruising, and tightness in the upper lip during the first week, with swelling most noticeable during the first 3–5 days. Sutures are typically removed at approximately one week. Most patients are comfortable returning to work and social activities within 7–10 days. The incision will continue to mature and fade gradually over 6–12 months.

Ideal candidates for a lip lift are healthy, non-smoking adults who have noticed an increase in the distance between the nose and upper lip with age, have a lip that appears thin or rolled inward, show little or no upper teeth when smiling, or prefer a lasting structural solution over temporary filler treatments.
